Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
