The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
